Fast Facts About America’s Preferred Home Warranty

Benefits and Drawbacks of America’s Preferred Home Warranty

Contractor flexibility: APHW allows you to choose your own service provider or select one from APHW’s network of licensed contractors for all repairs.

Inefficient quote process: APHW sends your quote via email rather than displaying it on its website after you fill out the quote form.

Competitive pricing: The company prices all plans under $60 per month, with its Legacy plan starting at $39.

Limited coverage for certain home types: APHW only covers single and multi-family homes. It excludes condos, mobile homes, and townhomes.

Solid customer reputability: APHW holds an A+ BBB rating and 4 out of 5 stars on Google Reviews.

Limited workmanship guarantee: The company’s 30-day workmanship guarantee only applies to built-in systems.

America’s Preferred Home Warranty Coverage Options

APHW provides two home protection plans: Enhanced and Legacy. Both plans cover a mix of home systems and appliances. In addition, APHW offers a Premier Coverage add-on.

The company offers a 30-day workmanship guarantee for all built-in system repairs. However, it doesn’t provide the same guarantee for appliance and add-on repairs.

Legacy Plan

The Legacy Plan covers a total of 24 home systems and appliances, including attic and exhaust fans, built-in dishwashers, central air conditioning, central vacuums, ductwork, electrical systems, exterior water and sewer lines, freestanding ranges and cooktops, garage-door openers, garbage disposals, heating systems, humidifiers, instant hot water dispensers, microwaves, ovens, permanently installed sump pumps, plumbing systems and stoppages, refrigerators, roof-leak repairs, septic systems, water heaters, and water well pumps.

Enhanced Plan

The Enhanced Plan covers the same items as the Legacy Plan, plus built-in trash compactors and clothes washers and dryers.

Premier Upgrade Add-On

America’s Preferred Home Warranty also provides a Premier Upgrade. It adds to the covered items ceiling fans, fire and burglar alarms, doorbells, lighting fixtures, and toilets. In addition, the Premier Upgrade covers cosmetic components such as HVAC grilles, heat lamps, and HVAC registers.

Optional Add-Ons

America’s Preferred Home Warranty offers additional these coverage options to supplement your home protection:

America’s Preferred Home Warranty Pricing

Expect to pay between $54 and $60 per month for an Enhanced Plan, according to a quote we pulled for a 3,000-square-foot, single-family home in Jackson, Michigan. Its Legacy Plan ranges from $39 to $47 per month. APHW’s Enhanced Plan costs more due to the extra items it covers. If you don’t need clothes washer or dryer coverage, you can save by choosing the Legacy Plan.

APHW allows you to select a $50 or $100 service call fee in its Enhanced Plan. Its Legacy Plan has a $125 service call fee. You must pay the service call fee each time you file a claim. APHW lowers your monthly premium if you choose a higher service call fee and vice versa.

America’s Preferred Home Warranty Coverage Caps

APHW provides a generous $25,000 annual coverage limit. Every claim you file subtracts from the annual limit. Individual item limits vary. For example, APHW provides a $2,250 limit per air conditioning system repair; it provides $500 per water heater repair. The table below outlines several of APHW’s coverage limits:

How to File a Claim With America’s Preferred Home Warranty

America’s Preferred Home Warranty provides a unique system and appliance repair solution. Unlike other providers that send a service technician after you submit a claim, APHW allows you to choose your contractor before processing your claim.

To get started, contact your preferred service contractor and make an appointment to diagnose your system or appliance breakdown. Once the service provider diagnoses the problem, contact APHW’s customer care support and state that you’d like to file a claim. The representative will ask to speak with your contractor, who will outline the work required and estimate. If your issue is covered, APHW will authorize your contractor to perform the repair or replacement. After your service provider completes the work, submit the itemized receipt to APHW. The company will provide reimbursement for the contractor’s bill.

Once APHW approves your contractor’s work estimate, you are responsible for paying APHW your selected service call fee.

Here are a few APHW customer reviews:

I had used another Home Warranty Company in the past, and they did provide coverage for as many items inside and outside of your home as APHW does. I love the fact that you are involved personally with the claims process if needed. Signing up for APHW warranty coverage(s) was a breeze. The claims representative explained everything and answered all of the additional questions that I had. I’m so glad that if I need them I will feel like a value customer and not just a claim number. —Charlene C. via BBB

I’m skeptical of most warranty companies. That being said, this warranty was provided with the purchase of our last home, and so when it came time to try to make a claim, I thought for sure it was going to be a pain. It wasn’t—in fact, quite the opposite. I was able to use a vendor I trusted and therefore didn’t feel like I was being taken, and the claim process went smoothly. My claim was approved, and to my added delight, our reimbursement was sent directly to our account. I was very pleased with the entire process! Would certainly recommend America’s Preferred Home Warranty. —Kristie G. via BBB

A customer of mine purchased a new house; I’ve been working for him for quite some time, and he asked me if I could speak with his home warranty department to clarify the work would be covered under the warranty. This led me to believe that they would cover the warranty. Work was done, and I spoke with someone again; there was a crack in the pipe, and they said they could not cover that because it was installed incorrectly. They are abs pipes, known to crack. I couldn’t believe they would not cover it. They also did not cover a clogged drain because of roots. It’s not a very reputable warranty company. I would definitely read the fine print before signing up.” —Joey G. via Google Reviews

They offered $375 for a failed furnace. I would have been ahead if I just saved the cash. Instead, it will cost more to replace the furnace than if I didn’t have the policy. —Jean-Paul L. via Trustpilot

How We Chose the Top Home Warranty Providers

Our team reviewed and researched dozens of home warranty providers, thoroughly analyzed sample agreements, and identified customer pain points based on analysis of customer reviews and interviews with industry experts. Our in-depth methodology guides our review process to provide transparent information about the companies we review.

During this process, we determined that the most critical aspects of a home warranty company include available service plans and add-ons, depth of coverage, plan cost, industry reputation, customer support infrastructure, and additional features. We also focused on the ability to choose your own contractor, upgrade your coverage package, transfer your plan to another owner, and cover roof leaks, high-end appliance brands, ceiling and exhaust fans, and faucets and fixtures.

Our research supported that plan coverage should carry the most weight, with customer support as the second-most important factor. Industry reputation, plan availability, and additional features were rated equally. We determined that price range, while worth considering, should not be the primary basis for choosing a home warranty provider for your home’s needs.
