The Home Depot Protection Plan is an extended warranty you can buy after purchasing a major appliance or general merchandise from Home Depot. SquareTrade, an Allstate company, underwrites the extended warranty. While not a home warranty, this coverage plan is a solid option for added peace of mind and extra protection for your recent Home Depot purchase.

Fast Facts About The Home Depot Extended Warranty

Benefits and Drawbacks of The Home Depot Extended Warranty

We like that the Protection Plan covers product breakdowns entirely, from essential components to cosmetic parts. However, these warranty plans are only available for items purchased at The Home Depot. Here are the benefits and drawbacks of The Home Depot Protection Plan:

Benefits

➕ Covers spoiled food up to $300
➕ Upholds a “No Lemon Policy,” meaning covered items are eligible for replacement after more than two service repair requests for the same issue
➕ Offers premium tech support for covered items

Drawbacks

➖ Doesn’t cover major systems
➖ Can take up to three business days for a technician to come out

The Home Depot Extended Warranty Coverage Options

The Home Depot Protection Plan has two versions: one for appliances and one for general merchandise, such as power tools. The plans cover normal wear and tear, cosmetic defects, and electrical failures caused by power surges.

Home Depot offers three- to five-year major appliance protection plans and two- or three-year general merchandise plans. To obtain a Protection Plan, purchase it in-store or online within 90 days of buying a Home Depot product. Plan coverage begins the day you purchase it and takes full effect after the product’s manufacturer’s warranty ends.

Part of our secret-shopping process involved reading each plan’s terms and conditions. The standout benefit we found was the “No Lemon Policy,” which states that if a covered Home Depot appliance or item needs repair three times for the same issue within the plan term, then SquareTrade will either replace the item or reimburse you for the full purchase price. The reimbursement will come as a Home Depot electronic gift card.

Below are the coverage details for The Home Depot Protection Plans.

Major Appliance Plans

The Home Depot offers several plans for each major or small appliance type. These plans cover common appliances, such as clothes washers and dryers, dishwashers, and refrigerators. The Home Depot also offers a water heater and water softener Protection Plan. You can choose a three- or five-year plan.

General Merchandise Plans

The Home Depot provides individual plans for many of the retail company’s products. For example, you can purchase plans for gas grills, mowers, power equipment, smart home products, and other Wi-Fi-enabled devices. Additionally, you can choose a two- or three-year plan.

Optional Add-Ons

While checking The Home Depot’s website, we noticed the Protection Plan doesn’t list optional add-on coverage. However, a section in its sample contract mentions there are several add-ons. After speaking with a SquareTrade representative, we confirmed that the company only bundles these add-ons with certain appliance warranty plans. Here is the list of additional coverage options that SquareTrade could pair with your Home Depot Protection Plan:

The Home Depot Extended Warranty Coverage Caps

Our research shows that The Home Depot Protection Plan doesn’t have coverage caps for repairs on covered items. However, if you purchase an appliance plan, it has a $300 coverage limit for spoiled food. If your plan includes the preventative maintenance parts add-on, the Protection Plan covers up to $500 per claim.

How to File a Claim

You can file a claim in one of two ways: online at squaretrade.com/thd or by phone via the dedicated claims phone number, 833-763-0688. Before submitting a claim, have a copy of the covered item’s receipt since SquareTrade references it. Depending on your issue, SquareTrade may require pictures of your broken item. Once SquareTrade receives your claim, it will send a service provider to your home within two to three business days.

If the technician can’t fix your problem, SquareTrade will continue sending service providers until it’s resolved. If the broken item needs service for the same issue more than twice, SquareTrade will replace it or reimburse you under its No Lemon Policy.

The Home Depot Extended Warranty Reviews

Our research shows that The Home Depot holds an A+ rating on the Better Business Bureau’s website. After reading dozens of customer reviews on third-party websites such as Trustpilot, we found customers had mixed experiences with The Home Depot. Most of the reviews we found related to the shopping experience with the company rather than the extended warranty plans.

Here are a couple of customer reviews we found that mention The Home Depot Protection Plans:

I’m becoming increasingly disturbed by The Home Depot’s failure to stand behind the products they sell. Case in point: I bought a Toshiba dehumidifier on May 10, 2024, which stopped working on August 12, 2024. I also bought the two-year replacement policy through Allstate at the time of purchase. The store informed me that I’d have to contact the insurance company since it was two days past the 90-day return window. I did, and the insurance company informed me that their policy doesn’t take effect until after the manufacturer’s warranty has run out. I called Toshiba, and they wanted me to troubleshoot the unit. Then, they told me it would take about 10 business days to receive a replacement voucher for the unit.—Jim S. via Trustpilot in August 2024

I will never buy another appliance through The Home Depot because of their affiliation with Asurion. I used to buy all my appliances from The Home Depot because of their extended service warranty (which was excellent). Since Asurion took over, servicing products has become a nightmare. It took them almost four months to repair my dishwasher last year. With the current repair, I’ve waited a month and spoken to multiple supervisors. I still have a broken dishwasher. I am currently filing a complaint with THe Home Depot about Asurion, which is easily the worst company I have ever dealt with. —Cristin F. via Trustpilot in September 2024

How We Chose the Top Home Warranty Providers

Our team reviewed and researched dozens of home warranty providers, thoroughly analyzed sample agreements, and identified customer pain points based on our analysis of customer reviews and interviews with industry experts. Our in-depth methodology outlines our review process to provide transparent information about the companies we review.

We determined that the following factors are the most important when comparing home warranty companies: available plans, plan coverage, price range, industry reputation, customer support, and additional features. Our research supported that plan coverage, customer service, and industry reputation should carry the most weight. While important, the other factors should not have as much influence when choosing a home warranty provider.
