Sears Protect Home Warranty Rating and Review
We rated Sears Protect Home Warranty 3.9 out of 5 stars. Sears Protect offers comprehensive home appliance and systems coverage, a lengthy workmanship guarantee, and 49-state availability. However, it limits plan availability in some zip codes, doesn’t offer additional coverage options, and lacks accreditation from the Better Business Bureau (BBB).
Here’s how we rated Sears Protect Home Warranty on key metrics:
- Available plans (4 out of 5): Sears Protect Home Warranty offers four protection plans. It doesn’t provide add-on coverage, however.
- Plan coverage (5 out of 5): The company provides extensive coverage for home systems and major appliances, each with generous coverage limits. It also covers additional refrigerators and trash compactors.
- Price range (3 out 5): Sears lost points in this category because it offers coverage plans for more than $50 on average and doesn’t provide multiple service call fees. It charges $100 per claim, which is higher than many other providers.
- Industry reputation (3 out of 5): Sears Protect doesn’t hold a BBB accreditation or rating. It made up points, however, for its nationwide coverage and extensive company tenure in the industry.
- Customer support (4.8 out 5): Sears Protect provides an extensive 180-day workmanship guarantee, which is six times the national average of 30 days. Sears Protect also offers a 24/7 claims phone number and an online portal.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Sears Protect Home Warranty
We like that Sears Protect Home Warranty covers most aspects of a major appliance repair, such as labor and components. However, we dislike the company’s insistence on using a Sears service technician. Below are the benefits and drawbacks of Sears Protect Home Warranty:
Benefits
- Covers high-end appliances: Sears Protect covers high-end appliances in its standard plans. Other providers exclude high-end coverage or offer it as an add-on.
- Has generous blanket coverage: The company doesn’t impose an age limit on covered items or exclude items with preexisting conditions.
- Offers high coverage limits: Sears Protect covers up to $3,500 for covered appliances and $6,000 for covered systems.
Drawbacks
- Limits coverage based on zip code: Sears Protect doesn’t offer its full range of coverage plans in every zip code.
- Doesn’t offer optional coverage: One of Sears Protect’s notable exclusions is its lack of add-on coverage options. Most home warranty companies offer some add-on options.
- Has a nontransferable policy: Sears Protect can only link its plans to one property. If you move, you must cancel your existing plan and purchase a new one.

Sears Protect Home Warranty Reviews
Our research shows that the BBB has not accredited Sears Protect. The company also doesn’t hold a BBB rating. Despite its lack of accreditation with the BBB, Sears Protect holds solid customer reviews on other third-party review sites such as Trustpilot.
While reading dozens of reviews, we found that customers enjoy Sears technicians’ service and the plan’s lengthy workmanship guarantee. Other customers dislike the limited availability of plan options and the lengthy claims process.
Here are a few positive reviews we found for Sears Protect Home Warranty:
“Great service and very professional. The technician came in and went beyond and above my satisfaction—and even gave some tips to me to use so I won’t have this problem anytime soon again.” —Kenneth E. via Trustpilot
“The service technician was great! He called us two hours before the five-hour window he was originally supposed to come. He had a cancelation, so he was able to come early, which I was really grateful for. My standalone freezer was full of food and defrosting. He was very friendly and professional. He answered all my questions. He was a really proficient worker. I appreciated the time that he spent here. Thanks again!” —Linda G. via Trustpilot
Here are some negative third-party reviews we found:
“They butchered a repair to my dryer last year, which cost me over $500 out of pocket for their incompetency. They are honoring replacing a washing machine that they could not repair. They recommended a specific replacement unit. Now, they’re telling me they don’t have one to ship me. I’ve been waiting since May 5 for my replacement washer. They’ve moved the delivery date out six times! At the moment, the delivery date is scheduled for the middle of July. They are the ones that recommended this unit. You would think it would be something they had available to ship immediately as it’s a replacement. The incompetency of this company is mind-blowing.” —Nick D. via Best Company
“I put a service request in on May 15th. The service tech came on May 17 and ordered the parts. It is now June 26—41 days since my refrigerator was diagnosed. Someone in case management finally told me the parts were back-ordered. No one at Sears ever attempted to contact me, even though every time I called to beg for help the agent swore someone would email me and tell me what was happening. No update was ever given to me. I had to be my own advocate.” —Allister B. via Best Company

Our Recommendation
Sears Protect Home Warranty is a solid choice if you want the convenience of its direct warranty service fulfillment. It uses in-house licensed and certified service technicians, and according to a representative, Sears Protect can send a technician to your home within 24 hours.
However, its exclusion of additional coverage options, limited plan availability in certain zip codes, and lack of BBB accreditation make other home warranty companies a stronger choice. One of our top recommendations is American Home Shield, which offers comprehensive appliance and system coverage. Where American Home Shield stands out, however, is its flexible service call fees and BBB accreditation.
Before signing up with a home warranty provider, we suggest requesting several quotes to compare coverage options and plan costs.

How We Chose the Top Home Warranty Providers
Our team reviewed and researched dozens of home warranty providers, thoroughly analyzed sample agreements, and identified customer pain points based on analysis of customer reviews and interviews with industry experts. Our in-depth methodology guides our review process to provide transparent information about the companies we review.
During this process, we determined that the most critical aspects of a home warranty company include available service plans and add-ons, depth of coverage, plan cost, industry reputation, customer support infrastructure, and additional features. We also focused on the ability to choose your own contractor, upgrade your coverage package, transfer your plan to another owner, and cover roof leaks, high-end appliance brands, ceiling and exhaust fans, and faucets and fixtures.
Our research supported that plan coverage should carry the most weight, with customer support as the second-most important factor. Industry reputation, plan availability, and additional features were rated equally. We determined that price range, while worth considering, should not be the primary basis for choosing a home warranty provider for your home’s needs.
